Alabama Gymnastics Moves to 5th

After posting its highest score of the season to beat LSU last Friday night in Coleman Coliseum, the Alabama gymnastics team moved to No. 5 in the national rankings this week.

Michigan jumped UCLA to take the top spot in this week’s rankings, which are determined by season averages. The Wolverines are followed by Oklahoma, Florida and UCLA. The Tide will face off against the second ranked Sooners and fourth ranked Bruins at home during the second half of the regular season after traveling to Gainesville on Feb. 8 to take on No. 3 Florida.

Alabama is ranked second on the vault after posting a 49.450, the highest team score in the nation this season, against LSU. The Tide is fourth on the balance beam, sixth on the uneven bars and 13th on the floor exercise.

Individually, junior Kim Jacob is 12th in the all-around after winning her second all-around title in a row against LSU. Jacob is also eighth on the balance beam and 16th on the floor exercise.

Sophomore Kayla Williams, who scored a career-high 9.925 on the vault against LSU, is tied for fourth with junior Diandra Milliner on the vault. Junior Sarah DeMeo is second and junior Ashley Sledge and senior Ashley Priess are tied for 15th place on the uneven bars. DeMeo is also 21st on the floor exercise.

Alabama returns to action this Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Coleman Coliseum against No. 15 Kentucky for the Crimson Tide’s ninth annual Power of Pink meet, which raises awareness in the fight against breast cancer.
