The University of Alabama football team took part in its first scrimmage of the fall on Saturday afternoon at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The scrimmage lasted roughly 135 plays and lasted just over two hours under sunny skies, with temperatures hanging in the low 90s for most of the afternoon.

“I think that we had a great opportunity to get a lot of guys a lot of reps out there today,” head coach Nick Saban said. “There’s not one player that played out there today that didn’t do some things really well, but they’re some things that they can do a lot better. I think right now, we want to reinforce the positives and get the negatives corrected. I think part of that is having every player self-assess so that they know what they have to do. We have to be able to correct those guys and teach those guys to do the kind of things in practice that are going to help them have a chance to improve, so that could be the biggest focus that I would have coming out of the scrimmage.”

The scrimmage was Alabama’s first of the fall in preparation for the season opener against No. 3 Florida State in Atlanta, Ga., for the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game. The game between the Crimson Tide and Seminoles is scheduled for a 7 p.m. CT kickoff inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium on ABC. The team will have its second off day of the fall on Sunday before getting back to work on Monday.

“I think that we can have a really good team. I’m not disappointed where our team is right now,” Saban said. “Are we where we need to be? Absolutely not. I think we just have to focus on what we need to do to improve. If every team in the country were ready to play the first game right now, they wouldn’t need to practice anymore. We’ve got a lot of young players at a lot of positions that can certainly benefit being the first time under the fire in action. I think we had some older guys that played really well in this scrimmage. We’ve just got to try and build on that.”
