The Alabama women’s basketball team will open its 2012-13 season Sunday afternoon at 2pm with a home contest against Jacksonville State.

Alabama and Jacksonville State will be meeting for the seventh time in program history but first in five years. The Tide owns a 6-0 record against the Gamecocks, including a 63-54 win the last time the two teams met on Dec. 22, 2007.

Last season, Alabama finished the season with a 12-19 record after losing 15 of its last 17 games. However this year, the Tide are looking to turn their season around.

I had a chance to catch up with the voice of Alabama women’s basketball Mick Gillispie, (the voice of County High football and part of The Game on 99.1 WDGM) who expressed his excitement over the new season.

“Last year this team struggled down the final stretch, but this year there is a new attitude” Gillispie said. “The additions of three new assistant coaches: Clarisse Garcia, Donnie Quinn and Tim Miller have gone a long way in helping reshape the atmosphere around the team.”

However, it is not just the addition of three new assistants that has Gillispie excited. Forward Briana Hutchen and point guard Daisha Simmons will be eligible to play this season after transferring from Rutgers University. While both are big additions for Alabama, Gillispie feels like Simmons will help shore up a major hole.

“I think she’s one of the best players this program has ever seen” he said. “She is a true point guard and I think that is going to be a major change for this team.”

Alabama and Jacksonville State tips off Sunday at 2pm. You can hear Mick Gillispie on the game broadcast on 99.1 WDGM’s sister station 790 AM WTSK.
