Alabama freshman point guard Jordan Lewis has been invited to the 2017 USA Basketball Women’s U19 World Cup Team trials, which was announced by USA Basketball on Wednesday. She is one of 33 of the nation’s top 19-and-under athletes who will attend the trials May 18-21 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Lewis, the 2017 Associated Press Southeastern Conference Newcomer of the Year, started every game for the Crimson Tide, leading the team, and ranking fifth in the SEC, in assists with an average of 4.3 per game. She also contributed 9.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals per outing.

Lewis helped the Crimson Tide to 22 overall wins, marking the highest win total for Alabama since the 1997-98 season. Along the way, she scored double-digit points 22 times, including a season-high 22 on the road at Ole Miss. She collected five or more assists on 15 occasions and dished out a season-best eight assists in the win over Georgia Tech during the regular season and in both victories against Tennessee. She led Alabama in assists 28 times, steals 10 times, scoring four times and rebounding three times.

Lewis played an average of 32.6 minutes per contest, the most of any freshman in the league, and was the only rookie in the SEC to finish the season ranked in the top 10 in assists. Her 154 overall assists during the 2016-17 season ranks her eighth in the Alabama record books for most assists in a single season.

In addition to being named the AP SEC Newcomer of the Year, Lewis also earned SEC All-Freshman Team accolades from the league coaches and was SEC Freshman of the Week five times.

Of the 33 trial attendees, 12 will be selected for the team. This year’s World Cup event will take place July 22-30 in Cividale del Friuli and Udine, Italy. Following the preliminary round, teams will be seeded according to group play, and all participating teams will advance to the July 26 round of 16. Winners will advance to the July 28 medal quarterfinals, while the remaining teams will continue playing out for classification. The medal semifinals will be held July 29, and the gold and bronze medal games are slated for July 30.
