Throughout the first 11 seasons of Alabama football seasons under Nick Saban, assistant coaches such as Kevin Steele, Kirby Smart, Lane Kiffin and Jim McElwain have come and gone from the coaching scene in Tuscaloosa.

However, one of Saban’s right hand men behind the scenes continues to shape the culture of Alabama football. Scott Cochran came with Alabama’s head football coach in 2007 and enters his 12th season as the football program’s strength coach.

During Monday’s “Capstone Report with DC” segment of The Blitz, former Alabama fullback Martin Houston and DC from Golden Shores Productions analyzed Cochran’s impact on the Crimson Tide’s dominance under Saban.

“I think Scott Cochran has been a common denominator on how good the Alabama teams have been over the years under Nick Saban.” DC said.

While Alabama’s strength coach is known for his loud, boisterous personality, Cochran oversees the program’s “Fourth Quarter Program” that prepares the team for the grind of the football season.

DC noted the principles that Cochran and Saban instill in the players and how it helps them during the season.

“They’re instilling mental toughness, being able to think even when you’re too tired to think and being able to make decisions even when you’re too tired to make decisions and make the right decisions.” DC said. “I think the biggest thing that comes out of it is discipline, self-control and mental toughness along with the strength and conditioning that you see.”

Houston and DC later broke down the influence that nutritionist Amy Bragg has on the football team, Scott Cochran’s importance in the summer and the role that junior running back Josh Jacobs could have in 2018.

The Blitz kicks off live and local coverage of Alabama sports every weekday from 6-7 AM on Tide 102.9/100.9 and the Tide 102.9 app.
