Cecil Hurt Recaps Alabama’s 33-14 win over Texas A&M [Audio]

The top ranked Alabama Crimson Tide took a step closer to sealing an appearance in the SEC Championship Game with a 33-14 victory over Texas A&M.

Veteran sports editor for The Tuscaloosa News Cecil Hurt reviewed the Crimson Tide’s big win over the Aggies in a wide ranging discussion on Inside the Locker Room.

While the Crimson Tide notched a big win Saturday, they lost one of their key leaders on defense in senior safety Eddie Jackson. Hurt noted Jackson’s guidance with the younger players as a loss for the defense.

The Tuscaloosa News sports editor discussed some of the changes Alabama will see in the secondary with the absence of Jackson.

“Hootie Jones’ role will change. Some of the other guys will change. You’ll see some of the corners maybe play more safety.” Hurt said.

Hurt highlighted Tony Brown and Shyheim Carter as reserves who could see increased playing time through the rest of the season.

With Nick Saban eyeing a possible sixth national championship, the veteran Alabama football observer touched on the uniqueness of Alabama having dominating runs in the 1970s under Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant and the current run under Nick Saban.

“It’s rare. It’s really rare to have this kind of success. It’s really unbelievable in this era, just as it was in his (Paul “Bear” Bryant’s) era, but it’s really amazing that a school can have two different eras like this. The only thing I could compare it to I guess Notre Dame back with (Knute) Rockne and (Frank) Leahy, and they were able to do it. That’s the only comparison, and I’m not sure even they were this successful.” Hurt said.

Hurt also provided an update on preseason practice and recruiting for Alabama basketball as well as the completion of fall practice for Alabama baseball.
