For most college fans across the Yellowhammer State, the final Saturday in October provides an opportunity to catch up on activities such as household chores as well as viewing college football teams from across America.

While Alabama and Auburn enjoy a bye week, several teams within the borders of Alabama have huge games awaiting them.

South Alabama Falls to Georgia State

After winning two games in a row, Joey Jones’ South Alabama Jaguars fell 21-13 Thursday night at Georgia State.

Although South Alabama outgained Georgia State in total yards by a total of 29 yards, the Jaguars struggled to run the football as they managed 41 yards on 23 rushing attempts.

South Alabama’s only touchdown came on a 75-yard pass completion from Dallas Davis to Jamarius Way with 2:11 to go in the game.

Troy Hosts Georgia Southern for Homecoming

Last weekend, Neal Brown’s Troy Trojans rebounded from a home loss to South Alabama by drubbing Georgia State 34-10. This week, the Trojans host winless Georgia Southern for Homecoming.

Georgia Southern is 0-6 overall and has dropped both of their Sun Belt Conference games this season.

Troy is in fourth place in the conference standings and is one game in the loss column behind both Arkansas State and Appalachian State.

On the surface, the matchups appears to be lopsided in favor of the Trojans as they lead the Sun Belt allowing just 17.4 points per game while Georgia Southern is dead last surrendering 41.3 points per game.

Kickoff is at 2:30 PM from Troy’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.

UAB Travels to Southern Miss

In one of their biggest games of the season, the UAB Blazers travel to Hattiesburg to battle the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.

UAB dropped a 25-24 overtime decision to previously winless Charlotte last week and could use a win to stay alive in the Conference USA Western Division standings. Southern Miss and North Texas are 3-1 in the C-USA West while UAB is third in the division at 2-2.

The key to the game will be the ground game as UAB is third in C-USA averaging 212.3 rushing yards per game while Southern Miss is second in the conference against the run holding opponents to 116 yards per game.

Game time from Hattiesburg is at 6 PM.

Top 10 Jacksonville State and Samford

For the third consecutive week, Jacksonville State enters a weekend contest as one of the top ranked FCS teams in America.

The Gamecocks are ranked third in the FCS Coaches Poll and STATS FCS Top 25 Poll. They will entertain OVC opponent Southeast Missouri for Homecoming. JSU leads the OVC at 6-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play while Southeast Missouri 2-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

The Gamecocks will also put a 15-game OVC winning streak at home on the line. Kickoff time 3 PM.

About an hour west of Jacksonville State’s campus, the Samford Bulldogs will host Southern Conference rival Chattanooga for a 2 PM kickoff from Samford’s Seibert Stadium.

The Bulldogs cracked the top 10 of the FCS polls as they are rated ninth in the STATS FCS Top 25 Poll and eighth in the FCS Coaches Poll.

Coming off a 427 yard passing performance in Samford’s upset victory at Wofford, junior quarterback Devlin Hodges earned the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week and received recognition by the College Football Performance Awards an honorable mention for FCS National Performer of the Week.

Huge Conference Tilts for UWA and UNA

The West Alabama Tigers and North Alabama face critical games in the Gulf South Conference Saturday.

West Alabama leads the GSC with a 5-1 conference record with six teams trailing them by one game in the loss column including North Alabama.

After dropping a 41-39 decision to Florida Tech last weekend, No. 23 West Alabama hosts West Florida for Homecoming. The Tigers will wear a special throwback “LU” logo on one side of their helmets to commemorate their 1971 national title team.

Kickoff from Livingston is at 4 PM.

North Alabama returns to Florence for Homecoming against GSC rival Delta State. After starting the season 1-3, the Lions have won two of their last three games thanks in part to improved play on defense.

Over the past three contests, UNA’s defense has allowed only eight points per game.

Kickoff from Florence is at 6 PM.
