Earnhardt, Jr., a six-time winner at NASCAR’s Most Competitive track and defending champion of the GEICO 500, started off the 2016 season in fine fashion Thursday night, capturing a victory in the first of two Can-Am Duel qualifying races at Daytona International Speedway. As a result, he will start third in Sunday’s Daytona 500 (front row was set with Chase Elliott and Matt Kenseth last weekend). With a victory in Talladega’s GEICO 500, Earnhardt, Jr., can become the first driver since Jeff Gordon in 2004-05 to win back-to-back GEICO 500s.

When asked about Talladega Superspeedway, Dale Jr. responded,

We were winning so many races there in a short period of time (five from 2001-2004), and some places you feel almost like you are at home, and this is one of them. The fans at Talladega love to see us win, they want to see us lead…ever lap. They get excited and they are happy when we are up front. I mean, I feel that. I love racing here and winning here.
