Former Southern Cal and NFL player Joe McKnight was shot dead in his home state of Louisiana on Thursday at the age of 28.

According to NOLA.com, a witness said two men were arguing at an intersection when one of them pulled out a gun and shot the victim, who was later identified by family as McKnight.

She said the shooter shot the man, stood over him and said "I told you don't you f--- with me." Then he fired again, she said.

McKnight played high school football for John Curtis Christian School near New Orleans and many considered him to be the nation's top player for the class of 2007. He eventually picked Southern Cal over LSU, Florida State, Ole Miss and many others.

There has already been a lot of reaction on Twitter from other athletes.
