The road to Auburn continues for west Alabama area teams as several area teams took a step closer to the Super 7 with first round playoff victories.

With today being Veteran’s Day, host schools around Alabama will conduct pre-game festivities to honor America’s veterans.

 

#1 Hillcrest (11-0) vs. #6 Spanish Fort (9-2)

Hillcrest looks to keep their magical season alive but face a tough opponent in defending state champion Spanish Fort in the second round of the Class 6A Playoffs.

The Patriots struggled early in their first round playoff game against Benjamin Russell before pulling away for a 40-16 victory.

Quarterback Cole Frederick threw completed 19 of his 25 pass attempts for 286 yards and 5 touchdowns while Alabama commit Brian Robinson racked up 66 yards on nine carries and a touchdown.

Spanish Fort edged Carver of Montgomery 23-22 thanks to a game-winning field goal by Matthew Quinn on the last play of the game. The Toros trailed 22-7 in the third quarter before closing the game with 16 unanswered points.

The matchup to watch for tonight will be Hillcrest’s offense against Spanish Fort’s defense. Hillcrest is second in the state averaging 44.8 points per game while Spanish Fort leads Class 6A in scoring defense allowing just 11.5 points per game.

Wicksburg (8-3) vs. #2 Gordo (11-0)

After a convincing 55-14 thrashing of Prattville Christian, second ranked Gordo hits the road for a second round Class 3A tilt against Wicksburg.

The two teams opened the playoffs last season as Gordo took the first ever meeting between the two schools 42-14 at Gordo.

Quarterback Koy Chapman connected on 15 of 21 passes for 327 yards and five touchdowns in last week’s win.

Wicksburg began the season 1-3 but have reeled off seven straight wins including a 34-28 first round upset at T.R. Miller. The Panthers are averaging 37.3 points per game during their seven-game winning streak.

 

Bibb County (8-3) vs. #6 Thomasville (8-2)

The Bibb County Choctaws host their second straight playoff game as Thomasville comes into Centreville for a second round Class 4A playoff game.

Hoitt recorded 234 total yards including 77 yards rushing and four total touchdowns in the victory over Munford.

Bibb County comes into tonight’s game leading Class 4A in scoring offense averaging 37.8 points per game.

The Thomasville Tigers travel to Centreville looking to extend a five-game winning streak. The Tigers held Catholic Montgomery to their lowest scoring output of the season in a 20-6 first round win.

Tonight’s meeting will be the third meeting between the two schools. Both of the previous meetings came in the postseason as Bibb County won a first round playoff game in 1997 while Thomasville topped Bibb County in a semifinal contest in 2010.
