Hurts, Williams Named SEC Players of the Week After Leading Crimson Tide Over Tennessee
Alabama freshmen Jalen Hurts and Jonah Williams were selected as Southeastern Conference Players of the Week for their performances at then-No. 9 Tennessee, the league office announced on Monday morning. Hurts earned his second freshman of the week honor and third conference selection overall, while Williams collected his first offensive lineman nod and second overall conference player of the week honor.
Hurts excelled once again, accounting for 132 yards rushing and 143 yards through the air in Knoxville to earn freshman of the week honors. He rushed 12 times for 132 yards to average 11.0 yards per carry while totaling a career-high three rushing touchdowns marking the first time any Alabama player had three rushing scores since Derrick Henry did so against Clemson in last year’s CFP National Championship. Hurts also added a 16-of-26 performance for 143 yards through the air to help the Tide finish off the Vols, 49-10.
Williams shined once again at right tackle, helping clear a path for the Tide’s 594 yards of total offense against the Vols to earn SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week. The freshman posted a grade of 90 percent and did not allow a quarterback hurry or a sack while committing no penalties. He provided the time for Alabama to rush for a Saban-era high 438 yards on the ground with five rushing touchdowns. Williams’ blocking helped Hurts (132), along with running back Bo Scarbrough (109), eclipse the 100-yard rushing barrier while Damien Harris was just off the century mark at 94 yards on the ground. The Crimson Tide averaged 7.8 yards per play and 8.9 yards per rush thanks to the line’s standout protection.
