Kevin Sumlin Says He’s Exchanged Text Messages with Johnny Manziel [VIDEO]
Before Johnny Manziel's career got derailed with multiple problems away from the field, the quarterback starred at Texas A&M under head coach Kevin Sumlin.
Manziel became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012 when he led the Aggies to an 11-win season and a top-5 national ranking. He helped Texas A&M make a swift transition into the SEC and helped make Sumlin one of the hottest coaches in football.
But a domestic abuse arrest, a failed rehab attempt, and a desperate plea from his father has turned Manziel from an icon to a sympathetic figure.
On Tuesday, Sumlin was asked about his former quarterback and whether he's talked to him since this downward spiral began.
"I can say this, I exchanged text messages with Johnny Manziel over the last two weeks. That's the extent of it. Look. Here's the bottom line. He's an Aggie and he's always going to be an Aggie. At Texas A&M, we take care of each other. So, you know, that has gone on. I have exchanged text messages with him, and really that's the extent of it."
Sumlin didn't elaborate any more on his conversations with Manziel but did acknowledge that there's always things that could have been done differently in every situation.
