Hall of Fame coach Pat Dye is known as one of the greatest coaching figures to ever walk a sideline. He was an assistant under legendary head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant before eventually making his was to the Plains to be the head coach of the Auburn Tigers.

Dye, who also was an athletic director at Auburn, joined The Game on Tuesday night to talk about the current hot topics of college football. One of the first things he discussed was Gus Malzahn's success at Auburn last season and how he originally was in favor of hiring another coach.

"I was not involved in the search, but I was hoping [Auburn] would hire Kirby Smart," Dye told host Ryan Fowler. "[Gus] has done an unbelievable job. To do what he did in one year. I've never seen anything like it in my football career starting in junior high school in '52 until today. It was the most incredible thing I have ever seen.

"Bo Jackson, Matt Crawford, and Pat Sullivan went through the interviews, and they talked to Kirby and other people, and they hired Gus. I think it was because he wanted the job worse than the rest of them. He is the right guy for the job."

Pat Dye believes that both major programs in the state of Alabama are great, but says Alabama football has gotten to the point where expectations are becoming to high for Nick Saban.

"[Coach Saban] has proven what he is," Dye said. "He doesn't have to apologize or make excuses, but he had as tough of a job as you could have. It was not all players, it was the circumstances surrounding last season. It is hard because those players and the coaches, as hard as the coaches try to get them ready to play every week, all they are listening to is the fans. They are not talking about beating Auburn, they are not talking about beating LSU, and they are talking about playing in Pasadena. You got to win the rest of them before you get to Pasadena."
