Music legend and icon Prince passed away on Thursday at the age of 57. The sports world was not exempt from expressing its sadness.

The musician's connection to athletics may not be as remote as you think. He played an electric and fondly remembered set at the Super Bowl XLI halftime show. There's also the classic skit from Chappelle's Show, in which Charlie Murphy reminisces about how the quirky singer schooled him in basketball in an odd and humorous encounter back in the '80s.

And, let's not forget the fact he played some hoops in high school and felt he was given short shrift when it came to playing time.

He also never lost his passion for roundball, as this vine of him at a Thunder-Warriors game shows.

So, yes, Prince, a Minnesota native who's as much a part of the state's fabric as its 10,000 lakes, will certainly be missed by those who work in sports. Reaction was swift on social media, where scores of people from a variety of sports chimed in after hearing the news of his passing.
