Women don't always get the appreciation they deserve in college athletics because of the larger, revenue-producing sports, but Alabama has always enjoyed high levels of success from its female student-athletes.

In honor of International Women's Day, we wanted to take a little time to recognize some of the tremendous accomplishments by the women wearing crimson and white. You might not realize it but more women's sports have won national championships at Alabama then men (3 to 2).

So let's start with the programs that have reached the pinnacle of college sports.

Gymnastics

Football claimed the first national championship at Alabama, but gymnastics had the only other team title in Tuscaloosa until recently. Sarah Patterson created a behemoth of a program that's since been taken over and flourished under Dana Duckworth. In total, the team has won six national championships, advanced to 22 Super Six Finals, and appeared in 34 straight NCAA Championships.

Softball

It's hard to find a program in the country that's grown as quickly as the Alabama softball team under Patrick Murphy. It began just 20 years ago, but Bama softball has become the standard in the sport. There's plenty of hardware at Rhoads Stadium as well thanks to a national championship in 2012, 5 SEC tournament championships. and 11 Women's College World Series appearances.

Women's Golf

Mic Potter's team has its focus on another championship run this year after claiming the program's first title in 2012. The team has reached 11 straight NCAA championships and boasts three SEC titles. Two women - Emma Talley (2015) and Eleanor Dudley (1941) - have won individual NCAA titles as well.

Beyond those three programs, there's women's basketball, which can claim the school's only Final Four appearance in 1994. The Crimson Tide also advanced to the Sweet 16 five times in the 90s.

Volleyball has won more than 700 matches and recently produced one of the most decorated athletes in school history. Just last fall, Krystal Rivers became the first player in program history to earn AVCA All-American honors all four years of her career.

Soccer has reached the NCAA Tournament twice and continues to improve under head coach Wes Hart.

Women's tennis has produced five singles All-Americans and three doubles All-Americans.

Alabama swimming can also claim numerous All-Americans. Over the past few years, the female swimmers are rewriting the school record book.

Finally, Alabama rowing, just over a decade old, became the 21st varsity sport at the university in 2005. In that short time, the program earned seven all-conference honors.

As you can see, the women at the University of Alabama help make the athletics department one of the best in the country. Tuscaloosa might always be a football town, but it has become a breeding ground for competition and achievement.
