The quarterback position at Alabama continues to be a popular topic in Tuscaloosa as spring camp rolls along and one former NFL quarterback weighed in on the battle.

ESPN NFL analyst Trent Dilfer joined The Game this week to share some insight into true freshman Tua Tagovailoa, who enrolled early and is going through spring practice with the Crimson Tide. Dilfer brings a unique perspective to discussion because he’s worked with many of the country’s top quarterbacks as a head coach at the Elite 11 camp.

“I think Tua has a chance to be an exceptional football player,” Dilfer told host Ryan Fowler. “Not good. Not great. Exceptional. A transformational type player. Doesn’t mean he’s gonna be. There’s a lot of things that happen when you go to college.”

Tagovailoa comes to Alabama as a five-star player and the top-rated dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2017, but Dilfer made a comparison that will stir up a lot of hype in Tuscaloosa.

“I’d say he’s probably the most gifted passer I’ve seen at this age. I worked out with Aaron Rodgers a lot when he was at Cal. Tua throws it better than Aaron Rodgers threw it as a sophomore at Cal-Berkley. That’s not an exaggeration.”

Dilfer pointed out that Rodgers improved a ton to get to where he is now, which is a Super Bowl champion, Super Bowl MVP, and a two-time NFL MVP. Tagovailoa will have to do the same to reach his potential, and Dilfer believes he has the right mindset to get there.

“The last thing about Tua is that he’s the most coachable kid that I’ve ever coached. He was a trainwreck when I first saw him in May of last year, fundamentally. I actually jumped him a little bit. I gave him some stuff I wanted to see changed.

“When I saw him about three weeks later, he had made the biggest transformation I’d ever seen a quarterback make in a short amount of time so I have a ton of confidence in the kid.”
