Vanderbilt freshman pitcher Donny Everett drowned Thursday while fishing in Tennessee. He was 19.

The Coffee County Sheriff's Department said in a statement Friday that Everett was with two teammates and two other people when he tried to swim across Normandy Lake near a bridge. Divers found Everett 15 feet from the shore.

Vanderbilt is the 2014 national champion and 2015 College World Series runner-up. The school is to open NCAA Tournament play Friday night by hosting Xavier.

Everett is a right-hander from Clarksville, Tennessee, who had gone 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 12 innings this season. The 2015 Gatorade player of the year for Tennessee enrolled at Vanderbilt after being drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 29th round last year.
