Tuscaloosa County came up short in its late-game rally attempt against Vestavia Hills on Friday night.

The Wildcats scored late but were unable to complete its comeback, falling 15-7.

Quarterback Sam Cooper found wide receiver LaDarrian Mobley for a 25-yard touchdown with 1:50 to go, but the Wildcats failed to recover the ensuing onside kick. The Rebels picked up one first down before taking a knee to run out the clock.

Prior to Mobley’s touchdown, Tuscaloosa County had several scoring chances, though missed opportunities – missed field goal, interception and a turnover on downs on the Rebels’ 3 – held them scoreless until late.

Vestavia Hills kicker Curry Howard made three field goals – from 32, 42 and 42 yards – and senior Morgan Long scored on a 5-yard run in the third quarter to build up the Rebels’ lead to 15-0 by the 11:58 mark in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, County High forced three turnovers, each one proving key for the Wildcats. Senior Isaiah Carson and junior David Taylor both recovered fumbles in the fourth quarter, setting up the Wildcats’ late turnover-on-downs and touchdown drives, respectively.

Senior defensive back Cameron Rice’s interception in the end zone ended Vestavia Hills’ opening series of the game.

Tuscaloosa County did not punt once for the first time all season.

The Wildcats (0-9, 0-7 Class 7A, Region 3) host Homewood (7-2, 6-1) in their regular-season finale next Friday night.
