Over the 125-year history of Alabama football, players such as Johnny Mack Brown, Harry Gilmer, Joe Namath, Derrick Thomas, Shaun Alexander and Julio Jones have helped to build a storied tradition in collegiate athletics.

In next week’s Super Bowl contest, a handful of Nick Saban’s greatest players will vie for a Super Bowl ring. Julio Jones and Cyrus Jones will appear in their first ever Super Bowl while Courtney Upshaw and Dont’a Hightower will make their second Super Bowl appearance.

During Monday’s edition of Southern Fried Sports, BamaOnline.com senior analyst Travis Reier journeyed into the topic of Alabama’s all-time greats.

Reier centered his discussion of the Crimson Tide’s greatest players with his Twitter poll question of the day.

The host of Southern Fried Sports elaborated on the exceptional nature of Derrick Thomas and Julio Jones at the collegiate and NFL levels.

He also mentioned his favorite player in Alabama football history.

“David Palmer is my favorite Alabama football player of all-time. He’s the guy I enjoyed watching play football more than any other player that has ever played at Alabama that I’ve been able to see.” Reier said.

As responses came in through the poll question, Reier touched on personal affinity for a certain player and the time period of a person’s formative years as factors affecting this type of topic.
