14-Seed UAB Stuns 3-Seed Iowa State for Tournament’s First Upset
It only took two games in the 2015 NCAA Tournament before the first huge upset occurred. The UAB Blazers, a 14-seed, held on to upset Iowa State 60-59.
The Blazers (20-15) overcame an early 10-point deficit to win the school's first tournament game since it beating LSU in 2005. Freshman William Lee, who finished with a double-double, scored the final four points for UAB. This marks the third straight year that a 14-seed has upset a 3-seed. Mercer beat Duke in 2014 and Harvard beat New Mexico in 2013.
Iowa State (25-9( was a popular pick to make a Final Four run after closing out the season with five straight wins and a Big XII tournament championship.
The Blazers will play the winner of SMU vs UCLA.
