Alabama senior guard Andrew Steele had surgery on Thursday morning to repair a sports hernia and will be sidelined for the next 4-6 weeks, Alabama head coach Anthony Grant announced.

Surgery was performed by Dr. William Meyers of Vincera Core Physicians in Philadelphia, Pa. Dr. Meyers is widely considered a pioneer in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of core muscle injuries (sports hernias).

Steele, the lone senior on this year’s team, had played in five games on the year, averaging 4.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 19.0 minutes per contest. He has not seen action since the Charleston Southern game on Nov. 23.

The Birmingham, Ala., native leads all UA players with 78 games played during his career.
