Alabama freshman forward Jeff Garrett will redshirt this season, coach Anthony Grant announced in a release ahead of Thursday's game against Southern Miss.

"Jeff and I met and decided he will redshirt this season," Alabama coach Anthony Grant said in a release. "We feel it is the best thing for him from a long-term standpoint. It will give him the opportunity to grow and develop as a player and a student. We feel Jeff has an outstanding future ahead of him."

Garrett, a Gadsden native, has not played in either of the Crimson Tide's two regular-season games but did play in the team's scrimmage against Montevallo on Nov. 11. Garrett has not played since due to wisdom teeth surgery.

As a high school senior at Oldsmar Christian in Tampa, Fla., Garrett averaged 18.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 blocks per game. He led the Eagles to a 25-10 record and a Sunshine Independent Athletic Association (SIAA) Final Four berth.
