"The Sack" from the October 4th 1986 meeting between Alabama and Notre Dame

It is a play remembered by Alabama football fans and commemorated in the homes of Crimson Tide nation. October 4th, 1986 was the date and Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama was its location as Cornelius Bennett raced around the edge and sent Notre Dame Quarterback Steve Beuerlein to the turf.

They call it “The Sack.”

In preparing for the January 7th meeting between Alabama and Notre Dame, The Game took a look back at one of the biggest plays in Alabama history, but from the other perspective.  Former Notre Dame and NFL Quarterback Steve Beuerlein joined the program and said it’s a play, he really doesn’t remember much about.

Beuerlein also dispelled the myth that it was a missed block that allowed Bennett a clear path into the backfield that October afternoon.

After a collegiate career in South Bend and a 17 year NFL career Beuerlein has headed to the broadcast booth, working as an analyst for CBS Sports.   When he looks at the showdown in Miami Gardens, his prediction depends on if he is thinking with his heart or with his head.

Beuerlein said he has a copy of the famous painting done of the play adding that when he and Bennett have crossed paths they have shared a laugh about the play.  If you would like to listen to the interview in its entirety, you can listen here.

The Game airs weekdays from 6-8pm on Tuscaloosa’s Sports Authority 99.1 WDGM.
