Alabama Post A-Day Offensive Depth Projection

Alabama's spring football practice has come and gone, and Saturday's A-Day scrimmage provided a little bit of insight into what the Crimson Tide's opening day roster might look like. While the roster is not yet complete, the spring transfer portal window opens on Monday, April 15, Alabama will likely only take players who have legitimate starting experience and are able to provide an almost immediate impact on the gameday roster.

Alabama's offense took control of the day, with several explosive plays highlighting the 34-28 victory for the offense. Germie Bernard emerged as the top target for the Crimson Tide's offense, and Alabama saw that the stable of running backs shone when presented with their opportunity. While there were some areas of concern, Alabama still has a long way to go until Western Kentucky comes to town on August 31, and a lot of things can change between April 14 and then. Still, what could the Crimson Tide offensive roster look like against Western Kentucky?

None of the quarterbacks looked their best on Saturday, but the improvements were there. The Crimson Tide offense was most successful under Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson, who have both been at Alabama the longest of the four quarterbacks. Milroe completed just three passes, but he went for 100 yards. Milroe seems to have found his favorite target, Germie Bernard, who led all receivers with 122 yards. The highlight of the day was Milroe's 52-yard completion to Bernard that ended at the goal line.

Ty Simpson looked to be in control of the offense much more than he was the last A-Day and more than he appeared so against South Florida in Alabama'a 17-3 win last September. Simpson led all passers on the day with 102 yards, completing seven of his twelve attempts. Is there room for improvement in the room? Absolutely. There's still a long way until August 31, and the quarterbacks will continue to grow and learn. The Tide are in good hands at the quarterback position.

Alabama's trio of top backs all had strong performances during A-Day, including at least one touchdown from all three. Jam Miller was the MVP of the spring scrimmage with 83 yards and two touchdowns. Miller was the leader of Alabama's running back room against Georgia and began to take an increased role in the offense with Jase McClellan suffering a foot injury. Justice Haynes flashed in limited snaps, with his biggest game coming in the Rose Bowl against Michigan. Don't count out Richard Young either, who ran hard during A-Day in limited action. While Miller might be the 'lead' back, Alabama could realistically run a three-headed rotation. It would not be shocking at all if Miller and Haynes split reps and even split starts. Alabama could look to lean on the run game early while the offensive line looks to solidify as a unit.

the tight ends did not shine as much as Alabama had expected, but having a safety net pass catcher is always beneficial to a quarterback and an offense. Some of the tight ends on Alabma's roster are better blockers, such as Robbie Outz. Outz is more suited to play a type of H-back role in DeBoer's offense. He's a gadget player, but not in the typical sense of the term. Alabama added Washington transfer Josh Cuevas to the room, and his explosive play ability can help.

The storyline of A-Day was Germie Bernard's emergence as the top target of quarterback Jalen Milroe. Bernard led all receivers with 122 yards on the day. While the rest of Alabama's wide receivers didn't have the type of day Bernard did, the Tide have plenty of depth along the wide receiver position, and it will get deeper in the Summer when two-time Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year and Mr. Football in Alabama, Ryan Williams, arrives on campus. Williams will be a semester behind the rest of the room, but he has the potential to be a contributor early in Alabama's star-studded offense. In addition to Williams, Caleb Odom showcased his size and abilities at A-Day. The two freshmen could contribute early behind the experienced Bernard and Prentice.

The offensive line struggled at times against the defensive line and pass rush. The line was not at full strength, with Jaeden Roberts suffering an injury a week before the A-Day scrimmage. Additionally, Parker Brailsford was unavailable for A-Day, but head coach Kalen DeBoer has mentioned that he'll be back at some point. The Tide could use his experience, although James Brockermeyer had a good spring as the center for the Tide. Kadyn Proctor, who started every game for Alabama last season, transferred to Iowa before deciding to return to Alabama midway through the spring semester. Proctor was present for Alabama's scrimmage on Saturday.

Proctor appears slimmer, which could help with his struggles in pass protection from a season ago.
