Alabama Practice Report 3/30: Jonathan Taylor Gone; Geno Smith Still Absent Following Arrest

By now, Alabama is on a routine.

The Crimson Tide continued its spring workouts Monday afternoon outside on the Thomas-Drew Practice Fields, its fifth practice in eight days. Overall, it was the fourth consecutive time the players wore full pads and the sixth practice in total this spring.

Observations:

- Alabama’s defensive line unit didn’t miss a beat, despite the absence of Jonathan Taylor, who was dismissed from the team Sunday afternoon. Taylor was arrested on domestic violence charges Saturday night, his second such arrest in the last nine months.

- Safety Geno Smith was also not at practice after being arrested and charged with driving under the influence for the second time in his career with the Crimson Tide early Saturday morning. He also missed Saturday’s practice. Alabama coach Nick Saban is expected to comment on his situation tonight.

- Also missing from practice was wide receiver Cam Sims. It has been reported that the rising sophomore may have suffered an ACL injury during Saturday’s practice. Saban should also comment on Sims’ status later.

- Additionally, there was an unexpected player practicing at wide receiver. Quarterback Cooper Bateman was wearing a white jersey instead of the usual black non-contact jersey for quarterbacks and catching passes as a receiver during the second media-viewing period. At the time, the quarterbacks and wide receivers were working on passing in the red zone from about the 5-to-10-yard range. He wore the black jersey and practiced as a quarterback during the first period. He also caught a few passes with the black jersey, too, before changing to the white.

- Left tackle Cam Robinson (ankle) practiced for the second straight time without limitations. He sat out of drills and rode the stationary bike during practice on Friday.

- Cornerback Cyrus Jones (hip) and outside linebacker Denzel Devall (foot) wore black non-contact jerseys and rode stationary bikes for the sixth straight practice. Neither will play this spring due to their injuries.

- Running back Tyren Jones (suspended) and offensive lineman Grant Hill (medical leave) missed their sixth straight practice.

- Defensive lineman Korren Kirven remains with the offensive line and defensive linemen Dakota Ball and Johnny Dwight are still with the tight ends. Defensive back Ronnie Clark is still with the running backs. All four players have been at these positions all spring.

- Cornerback Anthony Averett was with the cornerbacks for the third straight practice after a brief stint with the wide receivers for two practices last week.

- Dillon Lee and Jamey Mosley continue to work with the outside linebackers during the first media-viewing session, then shift over to the inside linebackers during the second session.

- Shaun Dion Hamilton is still paired with Reggie Ragland in the first group at inside linebacker, ahead of Reuben Foster.

- Alabama school president Judy Bonner was watching the practice from the sideline. This is worthy of a note mainly because it means she did not travel to Wichita, Kansas to speak to Wichita State basketball coach Gregg Marshall with athletic director Bill Battle today.

- Former Alabama safety Landon Collins was spotted on the sidelines, as well.

- Ben Davis, a five-star linebacker from Gordo and the son of former Alabama linebacker Wayne Davis, was reportedly going to be watching practice from the sideline. I did not see him for myself but several tweets from his Twitter account suggested he was in Tuscaloosa today. Click here to read more about Ben and Wayne Davis.
