Alabama Takes Part in First Scrimmage of Fall

The University of Alabama football team took part in its first scrimmage of the fall on Saturday afternoon inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The scrimmage lasted roughly 110 plays and was just over two hours under overcast skies with a light drizzle throughout. The temperatures for the day hung in the 80s.

“I was certainly pleased with a lot of the effort we had here today,” said head coach Nick Saban. “Our guys competed well. There was some really good, physical play with big hitting. The execution, for a first scrimmage, was probably okay but not where it needs to be. Certainly, we have a lot of things that we need to work on.”

The Crimson Tide offense progressed throughout the day, showing more polish and efficiency as the scrimmage moved along. The defense countered by making some plays of their own, putting their experience and depth on display from start to finish.

“The defense, as a group, is probably a little bit ahead of the offense, which is not unusual in terms of their ability to execute and do their job,” Saban added. “The defense, having a little more experience, certainly helps especially early on. Offensively, I think we got better as the day went on in terms of how we competed, how we played.”

The scrimmage was Alabama’s first of the fall in preparation for the season opener against Wisconsin in Arlington, Texas, for the AdvoCare Classic. The game between the Crimson Tide and Badgers is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. CT kickoff inside AT&T Stadium on ABC with Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and Heather Cox on the call. The team will have its first off day of the fall on Sunday before getting back for its third and final two-a-day session of Fall Camp on Monday.
