Alabama Wins Schooner Fall Classic with NCAA-Record Performance

The Alabama women’s golf team turned in a record-setting performance Sunday to win the 2018 Schooner Fall Classic. The Crimson Tide shot 11-under par in the final round to finish the tournament at -45 and break the NCAA record for team score vs. par by four shots.

“This team is so good that you don’t even realize what they’re doing when it’s happening,” UA head coach Mic Potter said. “You can shoot low on this golf course if you drive it in the fairway and we were able to do that. We gave ourselves chances and when we had an opportunity to make a birdie, we did. We didn’t make many bogeys either. It all added up in the end.”

Alabama (272-262-273/807) cruised to a 17-shot win over runner-up Texas (272-272-280/824), which finished at -28. Host Oklahoma (289-267-275/831) finished third at -21. Miami (Fla.) (291-275-267/833) was fourth at -19 and Baylor (278-280-281/839) finished fifth at -13.

Junior Jiwon Jeon and senior Lauren Stephenson finished first and second, respectively, in the individual standings and became the first Tide golfers to shoot under 200 for 54 holes in school history. Jeon (66-64-66/196) finished at -17 to set school records for score and score vs. par over 54 holes. The records come one day after the Daegu, South Korea, native set a UA 36-hole record with a two-round 12-under par 130 at the par 71, 6,048-yard Belmar Golf Club track. Jeon has now recorded five-consecutive rounds in the 60s over her first two tournaments at UA.

“Jiwon has won big tournaments in college before,” Potter said. “But this was her first win at Alabama. I think she’s feeling a little more comfortable here and she liked playing this course.”

Stephenson (66-65-68/199) also bettered the previous school record of 200 she set last season. Teammate Kristen Gillman shot 200 at last year’s Schooner Fall Classic to share the previous record.

Sophomore Angelica Moresco (71-65-70/206) turned in a career-best performance as well, tying for eighth at -7. Junior Kristen Gillman (69-68-70/207) tied for 10^th at -6 and junior Kenzie Wright (72-72-69/213) tied for 32^nd at even par.

Alabama will return to action at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, Oct. 19-21, in Austin, Texas.
