Rising sophomore Wilson Furr rolled through the Mississippi State Amateur this past weekend, carding an 11-shot margin of victory on his way to a tournament total of 12-under-par 272. With the win, Furr earned a sponsor’s exemption to this year’s PGA Tour Sanderson Farms Championship, which will take place Oct. 25-28.

Furr carded four consecutive rounds in the 60s (68-69-66-69) as he cruised past the 102-man field to claim the trophy. It marked the second time in four years Furr has won the event, having also claimed medalist honors in 2015 when he became the youngest player to ever win the tournament at age 16.

“It feels really good,” Furr said on earning the trophy for the second time in four years. “I’ve had this tournament marked on my schedule for a long time, especially because of the PGA Tour exemption. It definitely added to the pressure, so for me to play well and get the win gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the summer and heading into next season at Alabama.”

Furr will feel right at home during the Sanderson Farms Championships, which will be played in his home town of Jackson, Miss., on his home course – the Country Club of Jackson.

“It’s been a goal of mine since I started playing golf to compete in a PGA Tour event,” Furr said. “The fact that I am playing on my home course in front of all my friends and family is a dream come true.”

Furr competed in eight events for Alabama during the 2017-18 season, helping the Crimson Tide to a runner-up finish at the 2018 NCAA Championship. Furr, who carded the lowest round of the year by any UA golfer with a 63 in the second round of the SEC Championships, ended the season with three top-10 finishes, highlighted by a third-place result at the 2018 NCAA Stockton Regional.
