Andrew Zow Revisits His Days as Alabama’s QB [Audio]

Over the last decade, Alabama football has returned as one of the elite programs in the country thanks to the leadership of head coach Nick Saban.

Prior to his arrival in 2007, Alabama won just one national championship and three SEC championships under seven different head coaches.

A quarterback that played an important role on the Crimson Tide’s journey to the 1999 SEC title joined Wimp and Barry Sanderson Inside the Locker Room to revisit his career at Alabama.

Andrew Zow threw for 5,983 yards along with 35 touchdowns and 32 interceptions in his four seasons in Tuscaloosa.

Zow discussed various topics relating to his career at Alabama including battling Tyler Watts for the starting quarterback position for much of his career.

The former Crimson Tide signal caller mentioned how the change in offensive philosophy from Mike Dubose to Dennis Franchione affected him under center.

“The offense sort of flipped. We were more, with Coach (Charlie) Stubbs, spread and we could get under center and still run the ball and we threw the ball quite a bit. When Fran came in, he was all right on the quarterbacks to do a little more running, and I didn’t think it was a good idea for me to be running against SEC linebackers and defensive lineman who were a whole lot faster than me.” Zow stated.

Zow came to Alabama from Lake Butler, Florida, in 1997. He redshirted in 1997 and replaced John David Phillips as the starting quarterback five games into his redshirt freshman season in 1998. Zow recorded 1,969 yards passing while posting 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

As Alabama sees Tua Tagovailoa enter the picture behind Jalen Hurts at quarterback, Zow stressed patience and readiness for the true freshman from Hawaii.

“Be ready because that window, it only comes by every so often and when it does you need to be ready to jump and take advantage of the opportunity.” Zow said.

The former Crimson Tide signal caller also emphasized the importance of learning as a young quarterback.

“Right now is just learn to be a college kid with the opportunity to play football at a great level for a great opportunity, just enjoy that and definitely learn.” Zow said. “Learn from the guys in front of you, the guys that have gone before you and study the game.”
