Baron Huber Joins Tuscaloosa County High School Football Broadcasts

Former Alabama H-back Baron Huber will join the broadcast team as a color analyst for Tuscaloosa County High School football games this fall on 99.1 WDGM. Huber will work alongside Mick Gillispie, who returns for his 6th year as the play-by-play announcer of Wildcats football.

"Radio has been a passion of mine since I was a little kid, and I am so thankful for an opportunity to showcase this passion with WDGM," Huber said. "I plan on learning as much as possible from all the radio veterans at the station and hopefully spark a broadcasting career."

As a 2009 graduate of The University of Alabama, Huber was a key part of a program that transitioned into the Nick Saban era. He was one of a core group of players that were recruited to Tuscaloosa by Mike Shula but finished out their career on the 2009 national championship team. While he only finished with three career catches at Alabama, Huber played an integral role in clearing the way for dominating rushing attacks that included Glen Coffee, Mark Ingram, and Trent Richardson.

The Knoxville, Tennessee, native will bring a unique perspective to the broadcasts this Fall from a high school level. Huber played for one of the best programs in Tennessee and excelled on both sides of the football. He finished his senior season with over 120 tackles, forced six fumbles, three fumble recoveries on defense while accounting for five touchdowns, four as a receiver and one rushing, on offense. That experience will help him provide insight and analysis that you won't find on most broadcasts.

"To me high school football is the purist form of the sport," Huber said. "The 'business' aspect spawned from big time college football and the NFL isn't there. At the end of the day it's just you, your friends, and the pigskin."

Huber will be providing color commentary alongside Mick Gillispie, who brings a wealth of broadcast experience to WDGM. Gillispie is currently finishing up another season as the voice of the Chicago Cubs' Double-A affiliate Tennessee Smokies, where he's also began the year as part of the Cubs major league Spring Training broadcasts.

Gillispie also carries strong ties to Tuscaloosa and The University of Alabama. He's currently the voice of Alabama women's basketball on the Crimson Tide Sports Network and has also worked with Chris Stewart on Alabama baseball broadcasts. He is thrilled about the addition of Huber to the booth.

"Baron brings a wealth of football knowledge to the broadcast," Gillispie said. "He was a winner in high school and then played for Nick Saban at Alabama. He carries that same national championship work ethic and spirit to his daily life. Listeners and fooball fans are going to love him. I'm really excited myself."

Tuscaloosa County fans are also excited about the upcoming football season. Despite the recent transfer of running back Bo Scarbrough, the Wildcats have high expectations that come along with being ranked #8 in the preseason AHSAA Class 6A rankings. The Wildcats finished 2012 with a 9-3 record after a second-round playoff loss to Clay-Chalkville.
