An offensive explosion and a combined effort out of the bullpen propelled Alabama softball to a doubleheader sweep over Wallace State Sunday at Rhoads Stadium. The Crimson Tide shut out Lions 11-0 in game one before earning a 12-4 win in game two.

The Crimson Tide slugged six home runs in the first game, including two from freshman Kayla Davis. Senior Merris Schroder hit the first long ball of the day in the first inning, a three-run home run, and sophomore Bailey Hemphill and Davis followed that with solo shots in the subsequent two at-bats to make it 5-0. Sophomore KB Sides added another solo home run in the second to make it 6-0 and Davis’ second round-tripper of the day came in the third to make it 7-0. An RBI triple from freshman Skylar Wallace and RBI single from Schroder in the fourth extended the lead to 9-0 and a two-run home run from senior Caroline Hardy tallied the final runs of the game in the sixth.

In the circle, junior Sarah Cornell started the game and threw 4.0 perfect innings with eight strikeouts while junior Krystal Goodman backed her up with 3.0 shutout relief innings with seven strikeouts.

Hemphill started the scoring in game two on a bases-loaded sac fly in the first inning. Wallace followed the next inning with an RBI double and junior Claire Jenkins drove Wallace in later in the inning with a sacrifice fly. Schroder hustled around the bases in the third for an inside-the-park home run to make it 3-0 and a solo homer from Hardy in the fifth made it 4-0.

With the score tied at 4-4 in the sixth inning, the Tide offense lit up the scoreboard with eight runs. RBI singles from Sides and junior Elissa Brown started the rally and were followed by a two-run single from Hardy, an RBI double from Schroder and RBI singles from freshman Montana Fouts and another from Sides to cap the eventual 12-4 win.

In the circle, Fouts got the start with 3.0 inning pitched and six strikeouts while sophomore Madison Preston and senior Courtney Gettins closed out the game.

Alabama softball concludes its fall schedule Tuesday, Oct. 28 with a split doubleheader, facing Shelton State at 5 p.m. CT and Marion Military Institute at 7 p.m. CT.
