While the start of the college football season is a little less than five weeks away, the Alabama Crimson Tide opens fall camp Friday.

During Monday’s edition of The Blitz, former Alabama fullback Martin Houston and DC from Golden Shores Productions provided their thoughts on the Crimson Tide’s upcoming fall camp.

To begin their preview of fall camp, DC looked three areas of the program that could provide head coach Nick Saban’s biggest challenges beginning with getting the team focused on the upcoming season.

“One of the biggest challenges Nick Saban has this year coming in is that you get this team to get out of that ‘We are the champions!’ mentality and back into that “Hey we are just starting on a new season. It’s a new time’, and not become complacent but to get into the mode of working toward that goal of another championship this year.” DC said.

With over half of the starters on defense gone and a collection of new assistant coaches, the Golden Shores Production analyst laid out consistency and continuity as another area of concern heading into the fall.

“Another big challenge that he has, and the team will face as well is continuity and consistency.” DC said. “Coming back this year, they are going to have so many new coaches that although the process will be consistent, how they will apply it and how they translate it down to the players will be a little different.”

Although most of the fan and media attention has gone to the quarterback competition, DC sees a position on defense that presents the biggest set of challenges for Saban.

“The biggest challenge Nick Saban is going to have coming back is replacing so many star defensive players, especially in the defensive backfield. I think that’s going to be his biggest challenge, being able to find that cohesive unit.” DC said. “There’s going to be a lot of position battles going on in the defensive backfield, and I think that’s going to be his biggest challenge coming back.”

Later in the conversation, DC and Martin Houston looked at the importance of linebacker Mack Wilson stepping up as a leader for the defense and how juniors Trevon Diggs and Saivion Smith could become crucial pieces in a young secondary.
