County High School-Clay Chalkville Football Preview

History and advancement will be on the line Friday night as the County High Wildcats (9-2) make a trip Clay-Chalkville (10-1) to take on the Cougars in the second round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s 6A state playoffs. If County High is able to win the showdown, the Wildcats will not only advance to the third round, but record the program’s 500^th victory.

County High is coming off a 38-28 victory over the Gardendale Rockets (7-4) last week at Wildcat Alumni Stadium. After falling behind early in the game, Coach Lee Gibson said his team responded well to the adversity.

Allowing the Wildcats to get back into the game was a potent County High offense as quarterback Tyler Gates led his unit to 28 unanswered points, including a 30 yard touchdown pass to Tylan Perry to close out the first half. Gates finished his night with over 250 yards passing and three touchdowns, while Perry hauled in 7 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns, adding 14 carries and 77 yards on the ground.

County High now turns their attention toward a Clay-Chalkville team who Gibson added features a very talented offense.

The Cougars offense, which has scored over 400 points on the season, is led by quarterback Hayden Moore who is coming off a 140 yard, 2 touchdown performance over Decatur in which his playing time was limited in the second half. However, it is not just Clay-Chalkville’s offense that has been tormenting opponents the defense has been doing much of the same.

The Cougars defense has been aggressive, giving up an average of 14 points a game, but Gibson noted that the Wildcats will be sticking with the game plan that has gotten them thus far.
