The County High Wildcats (9-3) saw their playoff run and season come to an end Friday night, falling to the Clay-Chalkville Cougars (11-1) by a final score of 47-24.

For the second week County High struggled out of the gate with an early fumble on their own 27 yard line. The Cougars capitalized shortly after Sydney Battle punched it in from 6 yards out. However, just as they had all season long the Wildcats responded.

The Wildcats defense locked in, forcing a punt to senior Allen Cooks who raced 47 yards to give County High good field position. Soon after, quarterback Tyler Gates flipped a pass into the flat as sophomore tailback Derrick Burns scampered to the 5 yard line, setting up a 5 yard scramble by Gates to tie the score at 7-7.

Clay-Chalkvile and County High traded field goals to put the score at 10-10, then County High Coach Lee Gibson dialed up some trickeration. After a 28 yard Emiliano Ramirez field goal, the Wildcats lofted the kickoff into the air, recovering the kick at the Clay-Chalkville 25 yard line. Just a few plays later Ted Colburn powered his way into the end zone from 1 yard out, giving County High a 17-10 lead heading into halftime.

In the third quarter it wasn’t long before the Cougars would begin to separate themselves as Robert Green connected on a 28 yard field goal, followed by two touchdown strikes from Hayden Moore to Brian Clark (52 and 33 yards) Clay-Chalkville started to pull away 26-17.

County High’s Colburn would barrel his way in for his second touchdown of the night to pull the game to within two points, 26-24, but that is as close as the game would get in the second half.

With the loss County High finishes the year with 9 wins on the season; the three losses coming to Mountain Brook, Hoover, and Clay-Chalkville (all playoff teams).
