The search for a successor to former Alabama baseball coach Mitch Gaspard enters its third week.

Paul Phillips, a star slugger from the late 1990s and cousin to Andy Phillips, appeared on the Gary Harris Show to share his journey through baseball and offer his thoughts on the potential of Alabama baseball.

Phillips played one season at Alabama alongside his cousin Andy Phillips. Paul Phillips hit .344 with 10 homers and 38 RBIs during the 1998 season with the Crimson Tide. Both Andy Phillips and Paul Phillips would reach the major leagues during their playing careers.

Phillips is the hitting coach for the New Orleans Zephyrs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. Before going to New Orleans, he was the hitting coach at Lipscomb University.

The former Crimson Tide star touched on the 11.7 scholarship limit that Alabama has to negotiate and what Lipscomb did to manage the scholarship limitation when he was their hitting coach.

“When I was at Lipscomb, we just tried to get kids to full tuition because you’re like, we only have 11.7 (scholarships]. Let’s try to get them to full tuition because we feel like they got to eat and they got to sleep somewhere so mom and daddy got to pay for that one way or the other. Let’s just try to get them to full tuition so that we can try to be a competitive ball club.” Philips said.

With the recent struggles of Alabama baseball, Phillips believes that Crimson Tide baseball can be a powerhouse program.

“Alabama can do it again. There’s no reason in my mind why the University of Alabama can’t be a powerhouse.” Phillips said.

The Gary Harris Show airs each weekday from 9-11 AM on Tide 99.1 and the radioPup app.
