Johnny Manziel is changing.

Entering his redshirt sophomore season, he’s changed up his game, working hard with famed quarterback guru George Whitfield to polish up his passing game. In this case change is good.

The reigning Heisman trophy winner was passing more and running less-to the tune of a 24-30 passing performance for 303 yards and 3 touchdowns during Texas A&M’s spring game. While the passing performance was impressive-those in college football were surprised that the 1,400 yard rusher ran just 3 times for 18 yards.

Yes, things seemed to be on the up and up for ol’ Johnny Football.  An 11-2 season in year one, highlighted by a historic offensive output and a historic achievement in becoming the first freshman Heisman Trophy winner- he could do no wrong.

However, just like the moment you saw your favorite wrestler change sides from hero to villain, Johnny Manziel is changing roles as well.

Manziel is the second most polarizing quarterback in college football history (I am still giving the top spot to Tim Tebow) and as he once seemingly embraced the position, he now has resented it with the now infamously deleted tweet.

As I have mentioned before a Southeastern Conference quarterback has a much bigger spotlight than any other collegiate player in the country and probably some NFL players.  There is no training for the world these teens and twenty year olds are thrust into and now in the world of social media, there is never a shade from the public eye.

It’s not Manziel’s fault.

They don’t teach classes to handle the world he lives in. Yet, that doesn’t mean he’s never made a mistake. To put it simply, telling 360,000 of your closest friends on twitter that you cannot wait to get out of College Station is probably not the best idea.

So now the story is changing. Now we will start to wonder if the 20 year old who performed super-human feats on the football field will be able to duplicate his success. We’ll start to wonder if he’ll be able to handle the pressure.  We’ll be anxious to see if he can still be a leader of men and take Texas A&M to a new level in 2014.

The questions surrounding Manziel will be answered in a few short weeks (about 8 weeks from the time of this article). Manziel will likely continue to put up jaw-dropping statistics and win plenty of football games, but maybe with a few less fans cheering for him and more cheering against.
