During the 1950's, a 6-foot-1 quarterback from Montgomery named Bart Starr played quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide, however without an assist from the Auburn Tigers he may never have ended up in Tuscaloosa.

After leading Lanier High School to an undefeated season in his junior season, Starr was named an All-State and All American selection. With scholarship offers across the country, Starr had his choice of schools. In the end he accepted a scholarship to Alabama over the University of Kentucky, in large part because of Auburn University.

"I'd fallen in love with this beautiful little lady as a junior in high school. When I discovered she was going to Auburn I was in a real dilemma because I was heading to Kentucky because of Coach Bryant.

When I was discovered she was going to Auburn, I tell people I called the greatest audible of my life because I had the strongest feeling that if I went all the way to Lexington and she went to Auburn, I'd lose her. So I called the audible to be able to go to Tuscaloosa which is much closer than Lexington, Kentucky is."

After finishing his career at the University of Alabama, Starr went on to a hall of fame career playing quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.  A winner and MVP of the first two Super Bowls, Starr finished his NFL career with 24,718 yards and 152 touchdowns.
