Talks have been centered on the QB position at Alabama this spring. After losing two-time national champion AJ McCaron, Blake Sims was the featured topic around town. His performance during the A-Day game, leaves a lot of questions unanswered.

Since day one of spring, Alabama head coach Nick Saban has talked about the development of Sims from his mechanics to his leadership to his pocket presence. The biggest praise Saban has given Sims this springs is his ability to make plays with his feet.

“Blake is showing a lot of command out there," Saban said following the second spring scrimmage. "Blake made 3 or 4 plays with his feet, scrambling and then throwing the ball. He is doing a better job in the pocket.”

Even though it might not have been apparent Saturday, the growth of Sims has been there through the spring. During the two closed scrimmages, with an open playbook, Sims was able to accumulate 515 yards while completing 64% of his passes and adding five touchdowns.

Once A-Day took place, the limited play calling did not help him win over many people. He was 13 for 30 with 178 yards one touchdown and two interceptions. As the offensive performance of the A-Day game may not indicate any progression one hoped to see, Saban was quick to comment on the limitations.

“We really don’t try to feature players and I think that may be a little bit of a disadvantage sometimes to our players. Blake Sims, there are probably some things he can do as a quarterback that we really don’t feature in this game.”

It may be difficult to interpret the development of Sims. One thing we do know for sure though is the quarterback battle is just beginning. Sims may have the edge over Jacob Coker, as he has a spring under his belt in the newly implemented offense by Lane Kiffin, but that edge can quickly diminish within the time leading up to August 30th.
