Iowa State Hires Steve Prohm as Head Basketball Coach

Murray State head coach Steve Prohm, who was once a student assistant for the Alabama men's basketball team, has agreed to become the new coach at Iowa State.

The Cyclones made the hire less than a week after Fred Hoiberg left the program to take over as head coach of the Chicago Bulls.

Prohm has been in the mix for a couple of SEC jobs with the most recent being Alabama, a place where he began his coaching career as a student assistant before graduating in 1997. Now he has the opportunity to take over a program that has won 99 games over the past four seasons and could begin the year as high as preseason top 10.

The 40-year-old Prohm is the latest Murray State head coach to move on to a high-level position. Mark Gottfried (NC State), Mick Cronin (Cincinnati), and Billy Kennedy (Texas A&M) all had success in the Ohio Valley Conference before moving a power conference. Prohm's most successful season was his first at Murray State. That 2011-12 team won 31 games and made it to the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament. This past year, the Racers compiled the program's first undefeated conference record, but lost in the OVC Tournament Final and landed in the NIT.
