After being out of the ring for seven months due to injury, Tuscaloosa’s Deontay Wilder gets set to defend his WBC title Saturday night inside Birmingham’s Legacy Arena against Gerald Washington.

Coming into the fight, Wilder holds a 37-0 record with 36 knockouts while Washington is 18-0-1 with 12 knockouts.

Earlier this week, longtime trainer for Deontay Wilder and owner of Skyy Boxing Promotion and Gym Jay Deas stepped Inside the Locker Room to give a glimpse of Saturday night’s fight.

Deas updated Wilder’s health and mindset coming into the fight.

“Deontay is ready. Deontay had the injuries which is why he was off six months to his bicep and his hand. That’s all healed up, and we are ready to fight Saturday night.” Deas mentioned.

He also provided a progress report on the legal case involving the cancellation of a WBC heavyweight title fight against Alexander Povetkin scheduled to take place last year in Moscow, Russia.

“It definitely was difficult. Our opponent tested positive for performance enhancing drugs and that caused the cancellation of the fight so we had to go legal to try to get paid on that. Fortunately the money is in escrow in Chicago. We haven’t seen a penny of it yet, but we did win the case.” Deas said.

Deas later explained the timetable for when Wilder will see the money from the case.

He also highlighted Tuscaloosa products such as Deon Nicholson, Thomas Knox, Robert Alfonso and Keith Thompson that will be participating in the undercard fights prior to Wilder’s fight.

Deontay Wilder vs. Gerald Washington will be televised by Fox with coverage starting at 7 PM.
