Martin Houston Examines Jalen Hurts’ Growth as a QB [Audio]

One of the top stories involving individual players during the 2016 college football season was the emergence of true freshman Jalen Hurts.

As a true freshman, Hurts passed for 2,780 and 23 touchdowns while rushing for 954 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Toward the end of the season, his completion percentage started to dip culminating in a season low completion percentage of 41.9% coming against Clemson.

Prior to Alabama’s scrimmage over the weekend, former Alabama fullback Martin Houston examined the sophomore quarterback’s room for growth on The Blitz.

After looking at the impact of the offense as a whole under new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, Houston analyzed the areas of improvement for Hurts from the eyes of the coaching staff.

“They want Jalen (Hurts) to stay in the pocket. They want Jalen to use his arm a little bit more, and they don’t want him to instinctively just take off running.” Houston said.

The former Alabama fullback pinpointed an opportunity that you could see Hurts apply these adjustments while maintaining his team’s chances to win.

“I think some of those early times when he could extend plays in those easier games when opponents who I think that we’re superior to, and I’ll think you’ll see him work on his progression.” Houston said.

Later in the monologue, the host of The Blitz studied the characteristics that Nick Saban likes to see in his quarterbacks, the balance that Alabama’s head coach like to see in the offense as a whole and how Hurts is already taking steps forward with his overall game as a young quarterback.
