Last season's Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year winner, Alabama midfielder Merel Van Dongen has been named to the Netherlands National Women's Soccer Team for the 2013 European Championships.

Van Dongen, called up on June 10th, was officially named to the team by Roger Rabaya on July 1st. The Netherlands will play their first game on July 11th against Germany.

The first player in Alabama program history to earn the SEC Freshman of the year honor, Van Dongen was also named an All-SEC second-team performer, named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Freshman Team of the Season and a NSCAA All-South Region performer.

Last season she collected 9 points- three goals and three assists in 1,609 minutes of play. She started in all 19 games.
