One of the most surprising teams in all of college football last season was Mississippi State. The Bulldogs went from starting the season unranked all the way to the No. 1 team in the country.

Bo Bounds of The Zone 105.9 joined The Game on Monday to talk about how Mississippi State could be even better than they were last season.

“I actually think Dak (Prescott) has more weapons this year skill wise than last year,” Bounds told host Ryan Fowler.

One of the most important players coming back to State this season is the 2014 All-SEC first team quarterback. Prescott had a historic season last year that included passing for 3,349 yards, 27 touchdowns and rushing for over 900 yards. Mississippi State will also return its top wide receivers De'Runnya Wilson and Fred Ross. As well, the Bulldogs will bring back a stable of running backs that include Brandon Holloway, Ashton Shumpert and Damian Williams.

While Mississippi State’s offense got a lot of attention, it was the defense that really elevated it to the first-ranked team in the country. Though the unit lost a lot of starters, due to the NFL draft and graduation, the defense should still play at a high level because of the young players on the team who were able to play a lot of snaps last season.

“They were top five in the country in sophomores played,” Bounds said. “They are going to be better talent wise.”

With all of the momentum from last season, it can be easy to see why people are excited about Mississippi State despite the loss of a lot of last seasons starters. However, Prescott’s talent can only help Mississippi State improve from last season.

“If Dak Prescott was on Alabama’s team it wouldn’t even be close. You just would punch your ticket to the national championship game.” Bounds said. “He’s the real deal; he’s the best without a doubt in the conference.”

Mississippi State opens the season at Southern Miss on September 5.
