The status of Alabama defensive back Maurice Smith remains uncertain as he tries to transfer out of the program. Head coach Nick Saban addressed that issue during his first press conference of fall camp.

Smith will graduate on Saturday and reports say he wants to transfer to Georgia for his final season of eligibility, but Saban said he's following a policy enacted by the Southeastern Conference that prevents players moving from one member school to another.

"Nothing has changed. We support the SEC rule of not granting guys releases to go to other SEC schools," Saban said. "And it has been our policy here not to do that unless there is a special circumstance."

Saban said that the program is supporting him and helping him in every way that it can to help him go to other places outside of the league.

When asked whether he thought there was any chance Smith could still end up at Georgia, Saban wouldn't budge.

"Now you're asking me a hypothetical question, a what-if. I have enough issues here without any what-ifs."
