Nick Saban Singles Out a Quarterback in the Race for the Alabama Starting Job

If the A-Day game was the Alabama home opener, Nick Saban knows who would most likely take the first snap under center.

During a conversation with ESPN's Chris Low, who is visiting Tuscaloosa for the final week of spring practice, Saban named a frontrunner for the quarterback job.

Fortunately for the Crimson Tide coaching staff, the season doesn't start for another four months so there's still time to keep working with all four quarterbacks trying to replace Jake Coker.

Low joined The Game on Monday afternoon to talk about that conversation with Saban and gave host Ryan Fowler this recount of the conversation.

"Right now, I think because of experience and knowledge, Nick Saban said that Cooper Bateman would probably be their quarterback if they started right now," Low said. "But he also pointed out that this time a year ago, as he exits spring, he thought David Cornwell would be the guy. And he wasn't. Jake Coker won the job."

Saban also had some positive things to say about true freshman Jalen Hurts, who enrolled in January and is finishing up his first semester on campus.

"I'll tell you, (Saban's) very impressed with freshman Jalen Hurts with the way he moves around and makes big plays," Low said. "He's probably made fewer mistakes than anybody would have thought a freshman would make coming in."

Alabama will practice Tuesday and Thursday of this week before the A-Day game on Saturday. Admission for that game is free.
