The legendary Nell Harper Lee has passed away at the age of 89. Al.com reports that several sources in Lee's hometown of Monroeville, Alabama have confirmed that the author died this morning.

Lee is widely known for her Pulitzer Prize winning novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, published in 1960.

Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926, in Monroeville, Alabama, the youngest or four children. Her father, Amasa Coleman Lee, was a lawyer who served in the Alabama State Legislature.

Lee moved to New York in 1949; she worked as an airplane reservation agent and worked on her novel in her spare time. She submitted her first novel, Go Set a Watchman, for publication in 1957, and after multiple revisions, that novel became To Kill A Mockingbird and was published in 1960.

To Kill A Mockingbird, Lee's landmark work, has become a classic of American Literature. It is impossible to overstate the influence this profound work has had on generations of authors and schoolchildren alike.
