Ever since it was established, the targeting rule in football has been put under extreme scrutiny.  While it was implemented to make the game safer, the rule has come under fire for unfairly punishing defensive players trying to make a play on the ball.  While it will not go away for the 2014 season, the targeting rule has been significantly changed this year.

Targeting is one of several changes being made to on-the-field play this season in SEC football.  More changes involve instant replay, another controversial aspect of the modern game.  There is also the possibility of adding another referee to the field to help officials keep up with more complex and fast-paced offenses.

SEC Coordinator of Officials Steve Shaw was at SEC Media Days this morning to address the rule changes.  Here is what he had to say:
