SEC Network Analyst Matt Stinchomb Assesses Football around the SEC [Audio]

As the calendar turns to October, most teams around the SEC will reach the halfway point of the 2017 regular season.

Coming into the weekend, Alabama and Georgia remain the only undefeated teams in the conference while Florida, Auburn and Texas A&M are still perfect against SEC competition.

Earlier in the week, SEC analyst and former Georgia offensive lineman Matt Stinchcomb assessed the SEC on Inside the Locker Room.

In his second season as Georgia’s head coach, Kirby Smart looks to have Georgia in position for the SEC Championship Game with a stifling defense, outstanding running game and steady quarterback play from true freshman Jake Fromm.

In four starts under center, Fromm has completed nearly 60 percent of his passes for 734 yards while tossing eight touchdown passes and yielding just two interceptions. In his analysis of Georgia’s situation at quarterback, Stinchcomb believes that Fromm will likely retain his position as their quarterback for the rest of the season.

“I think that the kid they got in there now, the true freshman Jake Fromm, is going to have to play his way out of the position in games. I don’t think that the quarterback position will transition from practices to performances.” Stinchcomb said.

On the other side the conference, Alabama appears to be in full control of the SEC Western Division thanks to two resounding blowouts over Vanderbilt and Ole Miss. With the lack of close games through five games, the SEC Network analyst cautioned listeners about the quality of competition in the SEC and how it could hurt the Crimson Tide in postseason play.

“I think eventually if Alabama can’t find any resistance on its current schedule in the regular season, we know they’ll earn the right to find and get to play what is supposedly the best of the rest, the best of everybody else in this country and sometimes we’ll find a team that’s actually better than the ones that can be offered in the SEC.” Stinchcomb said.

With a number of new faces on Alabama’s roster, Stinchcomb further elaborated on his thoughts concerning the Crimson Tide’s inexperience in close games.

“You’ve got some new faces on that sideline. You definitely got some new faces on that field and so far this season, they don’t know what it looks like to have to fight and scratch and claw in the third and fourth quarter.” Stinchcomb said.

The former Georgia All-American later examined Georgia’s changing culture under Kirby Smart and the futures of Butch Jones and Ed Orgeron as head coaches in the SEC.
