Texas Booster Red McCombs Calls Charlie Strong Hire ‘Kick in the Face”

If you wonder why some people say the University of Texas football job might not be too attractive at this point, a Longhorns' booster gave the country a great example yesterday. During an interview with ESPN 1250 in San Antonio, Red McCombs strongly criticized the Charlie Strong hire just days after the introductory press conference.

"I think the whole thing is a bit sideways," the billionaire donor said of the hire. "I don't have any doubt that Charlie is a fine coach. I think he would make a great position coach, maybe a coordinator.

"But I don't believe [he belongs at] what should be one of the three most powerful university programs in the world right now at UT-Austin. I don't think it adds up."

McCombs carries a lot of clout in the state of Texas. The former owner of the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, and Minnesota Vikings has given more than $100 million to the school, which has dedicated the school of business to the benefactor.

That's what makes this even more incredulous. You would think that an intelligent man who's held the highest positions in the highest levels of professional sports would be much more discreet about handling an internal issue. But that's far from the case, apparently.
