ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Friday that Troy will give coach Jon Sumrall a new four-year contract that will keep him at the program through 2026. The contract will give Sumrall a pay raise, increased staff salary pool and additional program investments for players.

Sumrall began coaching at his alma mater Kentucky as a graduate assistant before leaving to become the defensive line coach at the University of San Diego in 2007. In 2010 San Diego elevated Sumrall to assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. Tulane hired Sumrall in 2012 to be the co-defensive coordinator and defensive line/linebacker coach. In 2015 Troy hired Sumrall to be the assistant head coach.

Sumrall left Troy in 2018 to be the linebackers coach at Ole Miss before leaving to be Kentucky's inside linebacker coach in 2019 and later the co-defensive coordinator in 2021.
